THUNDER BAY -- Many of the outdoor skating rinks across the city are back open and useable again, after more than a week of above zero temperatures forced them to be shut down.
Rinks across the city were more like puddles than skating surfaces, especially after the rain that fell last weekend.
The mercury dropped back below freezing over the past two nights, which has most of the rinks back in working condition.
Werner Schwar with the City Parks division said the supervised rinks will be in the best shape, as they take priority.
The unsupervised rinks could still be in rough condition, so skaters should be careful using them, but the skating ponds will likely be unusable.
The rinks are usually open until the March break, if the weather permits.
Schwar added that it's not just the temperature that affects the rinks surface, the sun will play a factor as well, and some more grey days could lead to better ice.
