A small fire at the Thunder Bay District Jail prompted an evacuation of its inmates.
Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the jail shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday to respond to reports of a fire that originated in a dryer.
Platoon chief Dave Long said crews were able to contain the fire using ladders from the exterior of the building.
“While en route we were informed that it was in a dryer but there was visible flame and smoke,” Long said.
“Apparently that room is isolated inside, and we were thinking that we had to go outside and use the venting system to fight the fire.”
All of the inmates were accounted for, and there were no reports of injuries.
The extent of the fire's damage was unknown, but firefighters on scene were confident it was contained to the one room.
