Smoking violations have hospital looking to community for help

Officials with the region’s hospital are looking for the publics’ help to enforce its no-smoking policy.

Since the rules came into effect, people have continued to smoke on the Thunder Bay Regional health Sciences Centre property. The smoking violations have occurred despite the hospital’s posted signs informing people about the rules.

No one has been ticketed for violations the hospital’s smoking policy, and now hospital vice-president Scott Potts said they plan to look beyond their doors for help.

“We would like to get the feedback from the community on what they think about the policy and some of the reasonable solutions are,” he said.
“It’s a costly process to monitor and enforce the policy.”

Potts added that they've spoken to hospitals in other Northern Ontario cities.

A community input meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon.
