Snow keeps coming while warmth stays away

It seems like winter just won’t go away.

The city received another dumping of snow over the weekend -- about a centimetre on Friday and another five on Saturday and some more on Monday morning. All that snow fell on top of the remaining March snow.

Geoff Coulson, spokesman for Environment Canada, said while it’s not unusual to get snow early into April, the forecasted temperatures do appear to be a bit on the cool side. Double digit high temperatures may still be a few weeks away.

“We can still get snowfalls into the month of May,” Coulson said.

“For this time of year we really would expect the high temperatures to be around 8C. The forecast for this week really keeps us in the low single digits. For Wednesday and Thursday, the daytime highs are only 2C.”

Like March, April is expected to be a colder month compared to what it was like last year.

Coulson said there’s no big shifts expected in the weather patterns.

“Normally what we would see for the whole month of April in the Thunder Bay area is about 12 or 13 centimetres of snow,” he said. “We’re already looking like we’ll be around that mark if not more than that.”

But Coulson did have some good news for the region.

He said by Tuesday afternoon, there will be a ridge of high pressure from the prairies that will clear the sky, bringing the temperature back to the normal range of 7C.

Residents braving the elements on Monday had mixed feelings that more snow was on the way.

Sharon DiMeo was out shoveling the slush from her pathway and said she doesn’t like having to keep shoveling now that April has arrived.

“I don’t like this especially after that nice weather we had a couple weeks ago,” she said. “This is really heavy snow. It makes me not want to drive. I’m a gardener for one thing and I think spring is going to be late this year.”

Meanwhile, Paula Paleczny told Thunder Bay Television that she didn’t mind that there would be more snow.

She took take a walk through the slushy snow and she said all the water would be great for Lake Superior.
