THUNDER BAY - Two snowmobilers had a rather frightening experience on a lake south of the city after becoming stranded in poor ice conditions.

The Ontario Provincial Police said in a release issued on Tuesday that a man and woman were snowmobiling Sunday on Moose Lake, which lies between North Fowl Lake and Mountain Lake on the Canada/U.S. border.

The snowmobile became stuck in slushy ice conditions and the pair were not able to return to their camp.

Just after 12 p.m., OPP officers with the Thunder Bay detachment responded to a report of the stranded snowmobilers.

Ice conditions on the lake continued to deteriorate, making rescue by snowmobile impossible. Officers with the Northwest Regional Emergency Response Team attended the scene and with assistance from Wisk Air Helicopter, the man and woman were rescued.

The snowmobilers were in good condition and there were no injuries reported.
