THUNDER BAY – Schools in Thunder Bay will dismiss students early Wednesday due to a snowstorm that’s snarled local roads and forced the closure of many facilities.

Students will be dismissed by 1 p.m., according to statements from the Lakehead District School Board, Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, and Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boreales.

Local school boards decided to take the step “due to current and predicted weather conditions," the LDSB said. The city has seen its largest snowfall of the year, receiving between 34 and 50 centimetres of heavy, wet snow.

Parents and guardians of elementary students at the public board are asked to arrange for pick-up of their children by 1 p.m., while secondary students will be dismissed by lunch. Schools will be contacting parents and guardians to arrange for the safe transportation of students home.

The Catholic board said that students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. and can be picked up by that time.

The board apologized for the inconvenience in a statement posted to Facebook.

"Collectively early this morning, all local school boards and student transportation services made the decision to cancel all transportation and keep schools open with the anticipation of the snow subsiding and road conditions improving," it stated. "We apologize for this inconvenience, the snow continues to accumulate and we know this has impacted families and staff across our city."
