The number of people accessing social assistance in Thunder Bay grew last year, and it is expected that trend will continue into 2010.

CAO of the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board Mary Lucas said they had 2,600 cases in 2008, and saw 3,000 cases in 2009.

Lucas said they expect a case increase of about 15 per cent this year. She attributes the higher numbers to the economy.

Lucas added that they'll be requesting a 15 per cent increase in their budget for social assistance from the board, which translates to about $1 million.
