THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay’s Solid Waste & Recycling Services would like to remind residents of the upcoming initiatives and updates that the holiday season brings.
The Solid Waste & Recycling Facility’s operating hours change during the holiday season. The Facility is located on the west side of Mapleward Road at 5405 Mapleward Rd., between Oliver Road and John Street Road. The holiday hours are:
Friday, Dec. 22 – Saturday, Dec. 23: 8 am – 4:30 pm
Sunday, Dec. 24: Closed
Monday, Dec. 25: Closed
Tuesday, Dec. 26 – Thursday, Dec. 28: 8 am – 6:30 pm
Friday, Dec. 29 – Saturday, Dec. 30: 8 am – 4:30 pm
Sunday, Dec. 31: Closed
Monday, Jan. 1: Closed
Tuesday, Jan. 2: 8 am – 6:30 pm
Residents are also reminded to recycle their natural Christmas trees by dropping them off at one of Thunder Bay’s tree chipping drop-off locations. Trees are then transported to the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility where they are ground into chips. The chips are combined with compost made from organic materials collected at the site all year along with the material collected during the spring and fall leaf and yard waste curbside pick-ups. The final product is given away in the spring to beautify residents' lawns and flower gardens.
North drop-off locations:

South drop-off locations:

· Kinsmen Northwood Centre (609 James St. N.)
· Westfort Playing Field (Off Neebing Avenue)
· West Thunder Community Centre (915 Edward St. S.)
All ornaments and tinsel should be removed from your tree before bringing it to a drop-off location. If you use a plastic tree bag to transport your tree, take it away with you. Trees cannot be left at recycling depots or put out at the curb for collection with the garbage.
Drop-off sites are open from Tuesday, Dec. 26 to Friday, Jan. 12. There is no charge for tree chipping.
Everyone is also reminded that the brightly coloured or foil wrapping paper often used during the Christmas season cannot be recycled because of its high ink content. Residents are encouraged to find alternative ways to wrap Christmas presents with recyclable materials, such as newsprint, or reusable fabric gift bags.
Due to the increase of waste during the holiday season, the City will allow residents to put out a third item garbage with no tag on the first collection date after New Year’s Day.
