Six municipalities in the Thunder Bay area are pushing for expanded representation on the District Social Services Board.

Currently, Shuniah, Oliver Paipoonge, Conmee, Gilles, Neebing and O'Connor have just one seat at the table. Known as Area 1 municipalities, councils from all six have recently passed resolutions that will come to the January DSSAB meeting.

Area 1 municipalities contribute a higher annual levy than other areas that DSSAB services, with the exception of the City of Thunder Bay.

Conmee Reeve Kevin Holland said they are requesting two more seats at the table.

In 2011, Area 1 municipalities contributed $2.3 million to the Social Services Board.

However, services used totaled just $500,000.

Holland added that the smaller municipalities are not looking for a smaller levy at this point, just a better voice on DSSAB matters.
