THUNDER BAY -- A new operator is set to take over three long-term care homes in Thunder Bay currently owned by Revera Long Term Care.
Southbridge Care Homes has reached a deal to buy Lakehead Manor on Vickers Street, Pinewood Court on Walsh Street and Roseview Manor on Shuniah Street.
The transfer of licences for the facilities is subject to approval by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
In an interview Monday with Tbnewswatch, Southbridge CEO Keith McIntosh said the company plans to redevelop Lakehead Manor.
"If we're lucky enough to get that approval, we will be what the ministry calls 'redeveloping' Lakehead Manor somewhere in the proximity of where it is right now."
McIntosh noted that Roseview Manor and Pinewood Court are newer facilities.
Together, the three nursing homes have 416 beds.
Southbridge operates 34 long-term care and assisted living facilities across Ontario, including Birchwood Terrace in Kenora.
McIntosh said the company plans to continue with current staffing levels in the Thunder Bay nursing homes, and has been communicating with union officials representing employees.
"We assume all the existing agreements...We don't anticipate any changes."
In a statement, Revera vice-president Susan Schutta said the decision to sell the Thunder Bay properties was "very difficult" but enables the company to focus in areas where it has a more condensed portfolio and regional supports.
She said Revera and Southbridge will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition for residents and staff.
The government requires a public consultation process before transferring nursing home licences.
Comments about the Southbridge application must be submitted to the ministry in writing prior to July 13, or at a public meeting scheduled for that day at the West Arthur Community Centre.
