With the cold weather now upon us, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials are encouraging parents to speak with their children about the dangers of walking on ice and exposure to ice cold water.

With the cold weather now upon us, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials are encouraging parents to speak with their children about the dangers of walking on ice and exposure to ice cold water.

Firefighters hope they don't have to use it this year, but local fire crews do have a special boat that can travel on icy waters to rescue people in danger.

Firefighters have already received some calls about children on ice, but fortunately everyone was able to walk back to shore safely.

Public Education officer Anthony Stokaluk says it only takes seconds for our bodies to begin shutting down in cold water.

Stokaluk added that even when the weather becomes consistently colder, no frozen body of water is safe because there are many factors that contribute to the thickness of ice.
