THUNDER BAY — If you've delayed switching your summer tires to winter tires, you may want to do it now.

The Thunder Bay area is in the path of a developing low pressure system that's expected to bring mixed precipitation to much of Northwestern Ontario, starting Thursday and continuing into Friday.

As of Wednesday morning, Environment Canada is predicting a total accumulation of between five and 10 centimetres of snow and ice pellets for the city.

There's also a risk of freezing rain.

Periods of rain or drizzle are expected to start Wednesday afternoon, and continue overnight with a total rainfall of 10 to 15 mm.

On Thursday, rain or drizzle will change to freezing rain or ice pellets near noon.

Thursday night will see freezing rain or snow, with snow and blowing snow predicted Friday followed by periods of snow Friday night.

Environment Canada said there is still some uncertainty over the exact track the low pressure system will follow, so snow and ice pellet accumulations may vary.

A winter weather travel advisory or freezing rain warning may be issued as the system draws nearer.
