THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay area is expected to be blanketed in between 20 and 50 centimetres of snow by Friday, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada on Monday evening.

The agency is warning residents in the area to prepare for a “potential significant snowfall” starting Wednesday afternoon, though it said the accumulation amounts remained uncertain as of Monday.

In areas south of Thunder Bay, amounts of 25 to 50 centimetres are possible by Friday morning, Environment Canada said, with lake enhancement from easterly flow.

Snow associated with a Colorado low are projected to move into the area on Wednesday afternoon.

In the city and areas to the north, amounts of 20 to 30 centimetres are possible by Friday evening. Those areas will mainly see snow on Thursday and Friday, according to the weather statement.

Environment Canada also warned blowing snow is also possible with a combination of snow and winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

Those conditions could make travel “very difficult,” the agency said.

The snowfall is expected to taper off by Friday evening.

The agency issued a statement with those details on Monday for the City of Thunder Bay, Cloud Bay – Dorion, and Kakabeka Falls-Whitefish Lake-Arrow Lake areas.
