THUNDER BAY -- Cleanup of the remains of the Sports Dome on the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition grounds is expected to begin later this week.

CLE officials on Tuesday confirmed a contractor has been hired and has begun an on-site preliminary analysis, with sighting of gas lines required before demolition and removal of debris can get underway.

Site remediation is expected to take two weeks to be completed and the cost is not being publicly disclosed.

The dome over the former multi-purpose sports facility collapsed in November 2016 and has been left to deteriorate ever since, with the exception of artificial turf being removed for the conversion of the former Confederation College bubble and some of the dome covering was also taken.

CLE officials last month said the lease between them and the owners of the dome was terminated in January. The city's bylaw and enforcement division issued an order to the CLE for the site to be cleared.
