City police hope to discourage illegal behaviour by cleaning up popular hangout spots in wooded areas.

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service were helping City of Thunder Bay staff clean up garbage around McVicar Creek near River and Front Streets.

They were particularly looking for items like couches, cushions and old tents that people use for comfort when using the areas to drink and do drugs.

Lately police have received several complaints about disorderly conduct in the area near the river. The clean-up is designed to discourage people from engaging in these activities in the area.

Later in the week, police will be cleaning up similar areas in the Intercity area.

One area was littered with hairspray and mouthwash bottles as well as blankets and old cushions.
