St. Ignatius graded as top city high school in annual Fraser Institute report

THUNDER BAY – St. Ignatius is at the front of the pack of city high schools.

For the third straight year the north-side school topped all other Thunder Bay high schools in the Fraser Institute's annual rankings of provincial high schools, which the think-tank released on Sunday.

St. Ignatius High School scored 7.1 out of 10 for the 2013-2014 year, which put the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board school 198th on the list. The score was slightly down from their five-year mark of 7.3.

The next local school on the list was Hammarskjold High School, which was the top city performer in the Lakehead District School Board, ranked 406th with a 6.1 score.

Following closely behind was Ecole Secondaire de la Verendreye, which was 421st with a score of 6.0.

Next on the list were two more Lakehead board schools, with Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute receiving scores of 5.8 and 5.6 respectively, good for 455th and 489th across the province.

St, Patrick High School was 502nd on the list with a 5.5 score, well down from their five-year clip of 5.9.

Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute was at the bottom of the local list, narrowly trailing St. Patrick with a score of 5.4 that put the city’s newest high school 512th out of the 749 schools graded across Ontario.

The top school in the region was Atikokan High School, which placed 136th in the province with a 7.5 score.
