Stabbing-spree suspect makes first court appearance

A 29-year-old man arrested in connection with a stabbing spree at a north-side apartment complex made a brief court appearance via video Tuesday. Eli Ayom John faces numerous charges stemming from the Saturday morning incident.

Amateur video shot by a resident of the Andras Court housing complex on Cumberland Street shows police surrounding the suspect after he had locked himself inside a police cruiser. The suspect eventually came out and was taken down by a stun gun before being arrested. 

Police were called in after reports that four people had been injured, including a 77-year-old woman and another person who had been stabbed. 

City police spokesman Chris Adams said the suspect remains in custody at the district jail. He now faces 10 charges, including several counts of aggravated assault.

The 77-year-old victim has had her condition upgraded from stable to good condition. 

John is expected back in court on Thursday.
