THUNDER BAY – A 46-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after firing gunshots at a vehicle his ex-girlfriend was inside.

The suspect threatened the 42-year-old woman with a firearm when she arrived at a Pruden Street home around 11 p.m. Monday night to retrieve personal belongings.

She was accompanied by a male friend and was able to get back into the vehicle before the suspect allegedly fired the weapon at the car, which was struck by multiple bullets.

Neither were injured.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were called to the scene where they set up incident command, with the Emergency Task Unit setting up containment around the home.

“It wasn’t clear at that point if the individual had gone back into the residence so (officers) had to treat it as a possible barricaded subject,” police spokesman Chris Adams said on Tuesday after the charges were announced.

An unknown number of nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“As the evening progressed information came out that he had in fact fled. We had containment still in place around the residence and a little bit outside that containment our uniformed officers had a good description of that individual, saw him walking in their direction and were able to take him down at gunpoint,” Adams said.

The suspect, who was apprehended around 4 a.m., was not in possession of a firearm at the time of the arrest, Adams added.

The charges also include two counts of assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police are not naming the identity of the man due to the domestic nature of the incident.

His next court date is scheduled for March 11.
