Steps for Life raises funds and awareness for workplace safety

Organizers said they were grateful for the support shown by the community after nearly doubling their goal.

THUNDER BAY – The 2023 Steps for Life walk Thunder Bay was held on Saturday and nearly doubled its fundraising goal to support families impacted by workplace tragedies.

The walk is the major annual fundraiser for Threads of Life, an organization that offers support and services to families affected by workplace tragedies.

“This walk starts off today and exists through the whole month of May as their major fundraiser, raising awareness for Threads of Life and what they do to support families,” said Mika, co-chair of the local planning committee.

“This walk, we made our goal this year of $10,000 and we exceeded it by reaching almost $18,000. And I think that we will exceed that goal,”

Previous walks needed to be scaled back due to the ongoing pandemic, but this year’s walk allowed the event to host roughly 60 walkers.

Mika said that she, along with the rest of the committee, were really grateful to see the amount of public and local support for a great cause.

“Health and safety isn't just something that you should limit to work time, these kinds of incidents happen because people cut corners and maybe because employers aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing,” she said.

“In terms of their health and safety programs, there are a lot of supports for businesses with health and safety programs and we'd like to raise the awareness of the importance of workplace health and safety and life safety and quality of life.”
