The province is considering making changes to the penalties levied against distracted drivers.

A spokesman for Transportation Minister Glen Murray says Ontario’s Liberals are looking at legislation that would deduct demerit points from motorists caught talking on a mobile phone or texting while driving.

But he says contrary to some recent media reports, there are no current plans to introduce the changes.

Ontario brought in a law banning drivers from using handheld devices in 2009.

The current penalty for drivers caught using mobile devices while driving is $155.
