Stolen bike recovered after showing up by chance on TBT News

A brief video on the evening news about an unrelated story helped a couple get their bike back after someone broke into their garage.

THUNDER BAY — Watching the TBT Newshour has paid off for a Thunder Bay couple whose southside home was targeted this week by a thief.

The couple woke up Monday morning to find their garage had been broken into, and a prized bike had been stolen.

A check of security camera video showed a person entering the yard armed with bolt-cutters to gain access to the garage.

It also captured him leaving with the bicycle.

Later in the day, the couple followed tracks in the snow to a house where they confronted a man about the theft, but he denied any involvement.

It turned out, though, that the individual who stole the bike came to have second thoughts about hanging onto it.

On Tuesday night, as the couple was watching TBT News, they saw a report that happened to include a few seconds of video of a Thunder Bay Transit bus.

Much to their surprise, mounted on the bus's bike carrier was the stolen bicycle.

The homeowners then contacted Thunder Bay Transit to find out if the bus driver recalled the stop where the cyclist had got off.

But Transit's reply was even more helpful than they had counted on – the rider had left the bike attached to the carrier, so it was now in Transit's Lost & Found.

The bicycle is now back in the garage, but will go to a repair shop later to fix some minor damage.
