City police believe a street race is behind a single-vehicle collision on James Street Wednesday.
Thunder Bay Police Service officials say emergency service crews responded to the crash just after 5 p.m. on North James Street by Ryerson Crescent.
It is believed that two vehicles were racing northbound on James Street at a high rate of speed. The driver of a blue Volkswagen lost control of the vehicle as it entered the corner, and collided with a tree on the boulevard.
Police say the damage to the driver’s side of the car was significant .
The 17-year-old boy, who was the passenger, was treated by paramedics at the scene and released. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man, believed to be the driver, was unconscious.
Paramedics transported the 20-year-old man to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The man has since been released from the hospital.
The Thunder Bay Police Service’s traffic unit has charged the driver with six offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
Those charges are:
- Racing a motor vehicle
- Careless driving
- Driving while suspended
- Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
- Failing to notify a change of address
- Using a non authorized plate
