THUNDER BAY -- New numbers from Thunder Bay's port shows the city harbour boasted its best September in nearly two decades.

About 1.2 million tonnes of cargo went through the port last month, including more than a million tonnes of grain.

The last time the port saw that volume for the month of September was back in 1997.

It's a big increase over September of 2015, which saw 850,000 tons pass through the port, along with 100,000 tonnes of other cargo.

For the year-to-date, there's been 4.4 million tonnes of grain shipped, compared to 4.9 million tonnes last year.

Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said the port is expecting to finish strong to the season.

“We were a bit weaker during the year, but we are making up for that now,” Heney said.

“It’s a big harvest this year, another very large harvest in Canada, so the last four years have been strong in Western Canada and this is going to be another one of those.”

Heney added that there was some damage with the rains during the harvest, but right now it’s coming strong and they are expecting another big year.

The port normally closes for the season in early-to-mid January.
