THUNDER BAY -- Most first-graders who win colouring contests aren’t given exposure to world leaders, but that’s where Oliver Kuitunen differs.
Oliver was one of three local students to have their artwork featured on Liberal MP Don Rusnak’s constituency calendar and thank-you cards.
“We wanted to show what the kids in the region are doing, and what they think it’s all about,” the local politician said.
The What It Means To Me To Be Canadian contest saw students from across the region put forward their artwork.
Oliver is one of three local recipients of the award, alongside Avery Lewkin from Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, Keira Beady and Gabriela Maertens from St. Martin Elementary School.
On Tuesday, Rusnak spent the day visiting the schools of these students, and talking to them about Canada.
Oliver’s drawing portrays himself “standing on the earth because I love the world,” he said. The drawing is intended to show what Canada means to the student.
“Canada is a good place,” he said.
Although the Grade 1 student may not understand the significance of the honour, his mother said it will be something he will look back upon fondly when he grows up.
“Down the road when he realizes how big of a contest he won, he’ll probably be in awe,” Joanne Kuitunen said.
For the time being, the Frisbee Oliver received in his prize package may seem like the cooler prize.
“He draws constantly at home,” Kuitunen continued. “To get recognized for what he loves to do is so exciting.”
