THUNDER BAY — The St. Ann School Community recently had a special cheque unveiling for their school.

Spearheaded by two teachers at St. Ann, Michelle Mastalerz and Laura Poluyko, the school set up a bake sale to help raise funds for the “St. Pat’s Needs a Hat” roof campaign for the St. Patrick Cathedral. Before the amount raised was announced, Father Pat Stilla shared a lesson and fun fact for the students.

He asked the students, “Why is it called a Cathedral?” There were some pretty fantastic guesses, with Father Stilla explaining — The Latin meaning of the
word “cathedral” is the seat. The seat referred to is the seat of the Bishop, who is the leader of a group of churches related to the cathedral. Because Bishop Colli’s seat lives at St. Patrick Church, it is referred to as St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As Father Stilla continued to explain, if Bishop Colli’s seat was at St. Agnes Church, then it would then become St. Agnes Cathedral.

With eager anticipation, Ms. Poluyko asked the students to guess how much they raised, finally spinning the large cheque to reveal the amount of over $1,000 raised by this small school community.

The St. Pat’s Needs a Hat fundraiser accepts donations online.
