Students at Hyde Park Public School celebrated the fall harvest with a feast Thursday.
The annual two-day event has students at the south-side school participate in a number of workshops within the school to learn about community and celebrate the things they are thankful for.
On Wednesday the students learned songs and dances and also helped prepare ingredients for a soup and apple crisp they ate at Thursday's Fall Harvest Feast.
"I think it's great for them to see their hard work pay off in the end," said Shannon Jessiman-MacArthur, vice principal at Hyde Park.
"They worked so hard to make this happen and the teachers have worked so hard to make this happen and now that it's here, it's just a celebration for everybody," she said.
Ingredients were donated by students, parents and some local grocery stores.
Grade 3 student Jorja Beerdhizen said her favourite part of the Fall Harvest was helping to make the soup.
"I actually kind of cried because I was cutting onions but it was actually pretty fun," she said, adding she also learned how to cut a potato.
"It feels good because I know that I helped make it so someday I'll kind of know how to make the recipe myself," Jorja said.
In the future, Hyde Park would like to partner with the Little Lions Daycare in the school to build a garden.
"We'd like to have our own community garden and have our own harvest," said Jessiman-MacArthur. "Growing your own food is even more gratifying than going to buy it at a store."
They could also tie the garden in with several subjects from science to math.
