Students explore wellness

THUNDER BAY -- Grade 6, 7 and 8 students in the Five Mile Public School Wellness Learning Academy have been truly whetting their appetites as they explore the four components of wellness – cognitive, social, emotional and physical.

On Thursday, September 29, the students hosted a Harvest Meal Celebration that will focus on “What Matters Most”.

“What Matters Most is a wellbeing theme connected to helping students reflect and rediscover who they are and what they value,” says Angelina Tassone-Vogrig, Principal of Five Mile Public School.

“During the week leading up to the meal the students learned about food preparation, family traditions and meal and eating etiquette to name a few topics.”

The preparation process for the locally grown meal provided the students with additional opportunities to bond, plan, connect, and learn from one another. Students were invited to bring in food items for this “stone soup” themes meal where the emphasis will be on working and coming together as a community for a greater good.

“The lunch tables were covered with decorative and personalized messages of what matters most to students and what makes them happy,” says Tassone-Vogrig. “The room was alive with meaningful conversations as students’ shared personal stories and family traditions with each other.”

The Five Mile Public School Academy is one of three pilot project Lakehead Public School Learning Academies.

The Academies provide Grade 7 and 8 students with the opportunity to learn in an experiential and rigorous environment while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Curriculum. The pilot academies provide opportunities for students to participate in inquiry and/or project activities that encourage students to learn through active experience, reflect on the experience and apply their learning to various aspects of their lives.
