THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay driver picked the wrong time and wrong place to tailgate another vehicle.
He initially caught the attention of a police officer by getting too close to the officer's unmarked car while both were travelling on Broadway Avenue near Highway 61 on Saturday evening.
Tailgating would be problematic during any circumstances, but in this instance it was made worse by the winterized road conditions, police said in a news release.
According to police, the officer pulled over with the intention of setting up his radar unit to monitor for speeders.
At that point, the motorist who had been following him accelerated rapidly and continued westbound on Broadway.
As he went past, he was clocked at 118 km/h in an area with a posted limit of 50 km/h.
The 20-year-old driver was ticketed for speeding, stunt driving, driving a vehicle without a validated permit, and failing to provide proof of insurance.
In addition, his vehicle was towed and impounded for 14 days, and his driver's licence was suspended for 30 days.
