THUNDER BAY -- City council is backing what it is being described as a whole new neighbourhood off Dawson Road.
Wenscott Developments' four-phase plan, called Dawson Heights, for more than 14 hectares of land between Dawson Road and Hilldale Road just south of the Ontario Hydro transmission corridor, would see a mixed use of houses, apartments, townhouses and even some commercial space.
"This is a plan for a neighbourhood not just a subdivision," city planning supervisor Ann Dawkins said.
While the city received several calls and 12 letters about the plan, Audrey Cormier, representing the Hilldale Gardens condominium board, appeared as an objector at city council Monday night.
Residents are also concerned about traffic on Hilldale with two large churches and the retirement home there.
"We sincerely doubt the ability of Hilldale Road to handle all the traffic safely," she said.
Council will ratify its decision on Oct. 19.
