Thunder Bay Police continue to hold the scene of a sudden death on South Marks Street while awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

THUNDER BAY - A sudden death on the city’s south side has been ruled a homicide by police.

According to a Thunder Bay Police Service, a male found with severe injuries on South Marks Street received the trauma from an altercation just prior to being located.

"We do know it was a physical altercation," said Const. Julie Tilbury of Thunder Bay Police Service. "The rest of the information is part of the investigation so we won’t be releasing that at this time."

The male was found just before 5 p.m. on May 22 on the 300 block of South Marks Street. He was transported to hospital but died from his injuries.

The male has not yet been identified and police continue to work with the coroner’s office to positively identify the man. Tilbury said because police do not have a positive identity on the man, it is too early to speculate what happened.

"We have received information from the public and the people," she said. "That is what we do when we do a thorough investigation. Our officers have been canvassing the area. Every little bit of information is being followed up to see if that will help us better understand what happened here."

The incident shocked area residents, who said nothing like this has happened in the neighbourhood before.

"The fact is an individual in our community was assaulted and has died as a result of that and we still have not made an arrest with regards to that," Tilbury said. "Everyone should remain vigilant. We have people working on that and that we will be able to get answers soon."

Police are asking anyone who many have seen any suspicious activity in the area on May 22 between 4:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. to contact police at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
