THUNDER BAY – City summer camps and playground programs will go ahead beginning July 13, though COVID-19 concerns will numerous adjustments.

The city wasted no time opening registration for the programs after receiving approval from city council Monday night. The public can register on a first-come, first-serve basis as of Tuesday by phone only, at (807) 625-8463.

Both programs will follow provincial guidelines on capacity limits, screening, physical distancing, and enhanced cleaning, the city said. The programs are open to children from 5 to 12 years of age.

Summer camps will run in a series of one-week sessions Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting July 13 and ending Aug. 28.

The city will accommodate 40 campers per week at Delaney Arena, and 24 at the Current River Arena. The camps will offer summer fun including scavenger hunts, crafts, games, individual, no contact sports, and outings to nearby activities.

Registration costs $166.88 per week for the first child, and $141.63 for additional children.

The city’s playgrounds program, which offers outdoor themed activities, is free to enter. It will be offered at the North McIntyre, Oliver Road, Volunteer Pool, West Thunder, and West Arthur community centres, and Vickers Park as weather allows.

Registration for July playgrounds programming begins Tuesday, while the public will have to wait until July 20 to register for August dates. A minimum one-week commitment is required.

The program will limit participation to 16 children per site, with that number split into smaller groups to encourage distancing.

The city supports the participation of children with special needs in both programs through Junior Inclusion Services. Requests for support can be made to (807) 625-3220.
