Trying to escape the glare of the sun led to a small but strange traffic pileup near Balsam Street Tuesday morning.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say that at about 8 a.m. a 65-year-old woman driving along Wardrope Avenue had to pull over her red Chrysler Neon to fetch her sunglasses. A taxi being driven by a 53-year-old man then struck the back of the nearly stopped car.

Both drivers exited their vehicles and were standing in front of the cab where they called police.

But before they could complete that call a third vehicle, a Jeep driven by a 30-year-old woman, smashed into the taxi.

Police say the driver of the taxi has been charged with following too closely, while the driver of the Jeep has been charged with careless driving.
