THUNDER BAY —  Sunwing will inaugurate direct flights between Thunder Bay and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic this coming winter.

The travel company says Punta Cana is consistently one of its clients' most popular vacation destinations.

Sunwing already provides direct flights in the cold-weather months between Thunder Bay and Varadero, Cuba and Cancun, Mexico.

The Punta Cana service will be offered weekly between Dec.19 and March 27.

Thunder Bay Airport CEO Ed Schmidtke welcomed the announcement Tuesday, saying "Sunwing has a long positive history in Thunder Bay," adding that it offers the community "tremendous winter getaway options."

Sunwing executive Andrew Dawson said the company's service from Thunder Bay has always been well-received, and he expects the Punta Cana route "will become a perennial favourite for many years to come."
