THUNDER BAY — Shane Muir will be the next leader of Superior North EMS.

Thunder Bay city officials announced Muir, the paramedic service's current acting commander of EMS operations, will take on the role of chief next month.

Muir, who first joined Superior North EMS in 2007, has also served as the superintendent of community paramedicine and led the service's COVID-19 task force. His appointment is effective Dec. 15.

“I am committed to providing the best possible public service to the citizens of Thunder Bay, District communities and First Nations while supporting the paramedics of Superior North EMS," Muir said in a written statement.

Muir had received the 2020 Richard J. Armstrong Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and significant contributions to paramedicine in Ontario.

In September, current EMS chief Wayne Gates announced that he would be retiring this year. Gates had served as permanent chief since 2016, after previously leading the service in an acting capacity during the previous year.
