THUNDER BAY -- Superior North EMS has opened another satellite base in order to increase response times.

Paramedics have been working out of the former Brown Street fire station for around six weeks. EMS deputy chief Don Stokes said its one of four satellite bases  now open in the city with one more on the way.

"Our strategic plan identified that our bases weren't where the highest call volumes were. So working with the city and the fire department we started spreading our bases around to areas with the highest call volumes," he said. "This (Westfort) is one of the areas that has a high call volume."

Paramedics will be deployed from the main EMS station on Junot Avenue. Westfort will see an ambulance and two paramedics use the base throughout a shift.

"We aim for being everywhere within eight minutes," Stokes said.

"That is our goal so this helps us get there."'
