Suspect armed with alleged handgun robs Red River Road store (2 photos)

Police say incident took place on Thursday afternoon.

THUNDER BAY – An armed robbery suspect believed to be carrying a handgun is on the loose.

City police on Friday said they were called at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon to Cathy’s Discount Gift Centre in the 200 block of Red River Road, where they heard the suspect had demanded cigarettes and cash from the clerk on duty.

The suspect, described as a Caucasian male standing 5-foot-10 and weighing between 200 and 230 pounds, fled on foot, last seen heading eastbound on Red River Road in the city’s downtown north core.

The accused had short, dark brown hair and a dark beard. He wore a blue and grey scarf that covered his mouth area and had a dark navy, with grey tint, puffy jacket at the time of the incident.
