Suspect faces numerous charges after crime spree in stolen truck

Police have laid more charges against a suspect following an investigation into a stolen vehicle.

Police have laid more charges against a suspect following an investigation into a stolen vehicle.

Detectives with the Thunder Bay Police Service say the charges stem from several incidents that took place throughout the weekend involving 20-year-old suspect Shane Kolody.

Police say just before 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, a 2004 Dodge Dakota was stolen from an Otto Street home. As a result, Kolody has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Also on Saturday, police say a driver of a Dodge truck filled up the gas tank at a Shell gas station on Cumberland Street and drove off without attempting to pay for the gas. That incident resulted in a charge of theft under $5,000.

On two occasions between 8:50 and 9:30 p.m. that same day, police say the owner of the stolen truck phoned police to report that he was following his own vehicle. Officers located the vehicle on both occasions and strategically followed the vehicle. Police did so without using their emergency lights.

Police say the vehicle appeared to be driven in an erratic fashion, which led to police charging the suspect with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

On Sunday, May 20, between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., police say a man was confronted after taking property from a vehicle parked outside a South Edward Street apartment building.

The 33-year-old victim of this incident attempted to retrieve the property, but was allegedly threatened with a knife. It was also reported that the suspect then fled the scene in the stolen pickup. While the victim was not injured, police added charges of robbery and dangerous driving.

Police have also charged Kolody with resisting arrest.

The suspect remains at the district jail pending a bail hearing, which is scheduled for May 28.
