DRYDEN, Ont. – A man is custody after an overnight standoff with police in Dryden that led to the involvement of OPP crisis negotiators and the evacuation of nearby residents.

Officers with the Dryden Police Service were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of First Street in Dryden around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning, the force reported in a release.

The occupant of the residence had fled, contacting police to report that they had been assaulted and threatened by a male suspect who “was possibly in possession of a firearm.”

Police cordoned off the area and evacuated some nearby residents to a safer location “due to the potential threat,” police said.

Dryden police engaged their Emergency Response Team, and contacted OPP for assistance.

Crisis negotiators were able to contact the suspect in the residence, and he was taken custody without incident around 7:30 a.m., said Dryden Police chief D. A. Palson.

Palson couldn’t confirm whether a firearm had been involved in the incident, saying it remained under investigation.

No charges had yet been pressed as that investigation unfolded, he said, while the suspect remained in custody early Friday afternoon.

The suspect was believed to be known to the resident who had fled, and was not also a resident of the home, said Palson.
