Suspect who failed to stop at border being held in jail

THUNDER BAY -- A 39-year-old Illinois man remains in custody after driving through the Pigeon River border crossing.

Provincial police officers apprehended the suspect on Wednesday after the black passenger vehicle failed to stop at the Canadian border checkpoint. The OPP conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver after he attempted to flee on foot.

The suspect, from La Grange Park, Ill., has been charged with assaulting a peace officer while carrying an imitation of a weapon, possession of an imitation weapon for dangerous purpose and using an imitation firearm while committing an offence.

He was been remanded into custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

A section of Highway 61 north of Boy Scout Road had been closed for a period of time on Wednesday while police investigated.
