THUNDER BAY -- A suspected thief who threatened an employee and a bystander after being confronted taking store merchandise, has been arrested.

City police, in a release issued on Sunday, said they were dispatched on Saturday to a Balsam Street business, just after 10 p.m., where they learned a male had entered the store and attempted to conceal merchandise, then after being confronted, left the business with unpaid merchandise.

Responding officers located a male matching the description of the suspect, who resisted arrest when approached by police. Police said it took multiple officers to get the 33-year-old into the back of a police vehicle.

The accused is charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, resisting arrest, three counts of uttering threats and assault.

He appeared in court and was remanded into custody to face a future court appearance.

It is Newswatch policy not to name suspects in cases which we do not anticipate following through to their conclusion in court.
