Suspended sentence for owner of dog that killed neighbour’s terrier

The owner of a dog that killed a neighbour's Yorkshire terrier in the Current River area late last year has received a suspended sentence.

The incident took place on Nov. 24.  A family on Hodder Avenue reported that their five-month old Yorkshire terrier, named Roxy, was killed outside their home.

The next-door neighbour's dog, believed to be a Husky, had managed to sneak under a fence between the two homes and was spotted with the smaller dog in its mouth.

City bylaw enforcement manager Ron Bourret said the owner of the larger dog was charged and pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court.

But because she had taken precautions by having a fenced yard, Bourret said the judge agreed to a suspended sentence, meaning there won't be any punishment imposed.

The dog was previously ordered to be leashed and muzzled at all times, including in its own yard, and Bourret said that order remains in effect.
