Suspicious Deer Lake death under investigation

A 30-year-old woman was found in distress and taken to the local nursing station, where she was pronounced dead.

DEER LAKE FIRST NATION  -- Police are investigating what they've deemed to be a suspicious death in Deer Lake First Nation.

In a release issued on Tuesday night, Ontario Provincial Police and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service say officers responded to an individual in distress at about 11:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The 30-year-old woman, identified as Vanessa Kakegumic, was transported to the local nursing station, but was later pronounced dead, despite life-saving measures being taken.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted by the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to determine the cause of death.

The investigation continues and police say there is no threat to public safety.
