A faculty member at Lakehead University will chair research being conducted at the university into sustainable food systems.

The appointment of Dr. Charles Levkoe, an assistant professor in the department of Health Sciences, was announced Monday by federal Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan.

Levkoe's project will investigate ways that academics and community-based practitioners including food producers, public health workers and indigenous communities, can build more equitable and sustainable food systems to address social, economic and environmental challenges.

Levkoe said he looks forward to "working closely with faculty and students ... and with people in Thunder Bay and the surrounding region to better understand solutions that are socially just, ecologically regenerative, and have a regional economic focus."

He added that he's excited at the prospect of engaging "with the research and lived experiences of scholars, practitioners and social movement to build more sustainable food systems for all."

Monday's announcement brings to eleven the number of Canada Research Chairs at Lakehead. For the second year in a row, the Thunder Bay school was recently ranked first in research among Canada's undergraduate universities.
