THUNDER BAY — Civilians and Thunder Bay firefighters teamed up Monday night to rescue a swimmer in Thunder Bay harbour.
According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, a man made a misguided attempt to swim from Marina Park to the lighthouse on the breakwall.
"He was just in his underwear. He started to get quite fatigued," said Platoon Chief Mark Ference.
Bystanders took firefighters to the struggling swimmer in a boat, since it was faster to reach the man that way rather than waiting for the fire service to get its boat in the water.
He was treated onshore by Superior North EMS paramedics.
Ference said the quick response may well have saved the man from succumbing to hypothermia and drowning.
