THUNDER BAY – As temperatures drop following an unseasonably warm January, Synergy North says it will provide free block-heater timers to help its customers cut down energy costs.

The power provider on Friday said the Block Heater Timer program will allow users to have their block heater turn on for just a few hours each night, rather than drain electricity from dusk until dawn.

Synergy North, in a release issued on Friday, said installing the devices on a vehicle can save customers up to $25 over the winter months.

There’s a misconception out there that a vehicle must be plugged in at all times in order to start. In reality, when the temperature drops below -15 C.

“Winter can be hard on your vehicle and your electricity bill. Synergy North encourages home owners to be energy conscious; through this program we aim to provide a solution to help you save energy and dollars on your electricity bill and avoid that chilly trip out to your vehicle to go plug it in, first thing in the morning or late at night,” said Jake Allen, Synergy North, supervisor, energy efficiency services.

The program is being offered to eligible customers in Thunder Bay and Kenora. To book an appointment, phone 1-833-428-1451 or email bht@synergynorth.ca.

Installation is free of charge.

“Synergy North understands our customers are unique when it comes to our weather and energy usage throughout the winter months. We wanted to provide an alternative for those cold days to get your vehicle started, but not waste energy. Limited quantities of the block heater timers are available and interested customers are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to participate in this new program,” Allen said.
