The Thunder Bay Police Services Board has appointed Superintendent Dan Taddeo to serve as Acting Deputy Chief of Police, following the suspension of Ryan Hughes from the role pending an internal investigation.

Taddeo’s appointment took effect immediately following a vote of the board Friday, said chair Kristen Oliver in a statement.

“I would like to thank Acting Deputy Chief Taddeo for taking on this role for the Thunder Bay Police Service, assisting Chief Hauth in providing our communities with appropriate and effective policing,” she said. “We look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Taddeo, who has been with the force since 1988, will step in following the suspension of Ryan Hughes on Jan. 28 for unknown reasons.

Ontario’s Solicitor General had called for an investigation of senior leadership including Hughes and chief Sylvie Hauth, after numerous current and former officers, and police services board member Georjann Morriseau, filed human rights complaints alleging discrimination.

The Thunder Bay Police Association has also called for an investigation, and expressed its lack of faith in current leadership.
