THUNDER BAY -- Around 40 women marched the streets of Thunder Bay Thursday night as part of Take Back the Night.
It's an event that brings attention to violence against women and let's the survivors of that violence know they're not alone.
The evening began indoors with songs, stories and artwork commemorating women who have survived or been lost to violence. The event was organized by several groups, including the Lakehead Student Union Gender Issues Centre and Aboriginal Awareness Centre.
There were also several booths providing information on services available to survivors. Speakers also shared their personal stories. Sherrie Lee Chiarot is a survivor. She said it's important for men and women to have discussions about violence.
The march started and ended at St. Paul’s United Church. According to the Canadian Women's Foundation, half of all Canadian women over 16 have experienced at least one case of physical or sexual violence.
