Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs says based on ongoing talks, he believes the CN-owned James Street Swing Bridge will be open to vehicular traffic by Christmas or shortly thereafter.

Hobbs, speaking during a candidate profile interview on Monday, said he’s also convinced it won’t cost Thunder Bay taxpayers a dime.

The mayor, in a six-way race to retain his seat said he couldn’t elaborate any further due to the sensitive nature of the talks.

“That’s all I can say right now,” Hobbs said.

The bridge, which reopened to rail traffic last year, has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians since an Oct. 29, 2013 fire engulfed the span, which crosses the Kaministiquia River.
