THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay International Airport says it's taken steps to improve taxi service for airport users.

Three companies instead of one are now able to operate there.

The airport authority announced Tuesday that local cab companies Diamond and Roach's Yellow Taxi will "collaborate" to increase service.

Both companies will have a designated spot at the curb, allowing passengers more options than they previously had.

Up until now, only Roach's was authorized to operate at the airport.

Earlier this year, the airport authority also licensed local rideshare company URIDE to serve the airport.

According to airport officials, this has helped alleviate long wait times during peak aircraft arrival times.

"We appreciate the efforts of all three companies to improve car-for-hire services to reduce wait times for our mutual customers," said airport president and CEO Ed Schmidtke.

Schmidtke said airport officials had received complaints from passengers from time to time about delays in catching a cab.

He said the airport had been monitoring the situation as well, and decided it needed to address the issue.
