THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has released the details of booking procedures under the accelerated rollout of second doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Due to the timing of vaccine shipments to the city, the procedures vary depending on which vaccine was administered in the first shot.

The following instructions apply to those 70 years and older, as well as individuals who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine on or before April 18, 2021.

For people who are now eligible to book their second dose appointment and who had their first appointment at the CLE Coliseum through the TBDHU Immunization clinic:

  • Individuals who received Pfizer vaccine for their first dose – second doses can now be booked through either the https://covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/ provincial booking system or by calling 1-833-943-3900. Appointments are available for the week of June 21 at the TBDHU clinic at the CLE Coliseum
  • Individuals who received Moderna vaccine for their first dose – second doses can now be booked through the https://tbdhu.canadaehs.com/Default.aspx?PageID=11559 TBDHU website for dedicated Moderna clinics. Appointments are available for the week of June 28 at the TBDHU clinic at the CLE Coliseum

The health unit said the separate clinics are being put in place so that everyone who is eligible for a second dose will be able to book an appointment. It explained that at this time it can't guarantee that Moderna vaccine will be available the week of June 21.

TBDHU said it is working to make additional appointment spots available to accommodate the increased number of individuals eligible for second doses, while also accommodating those who still require a first dose.

It said it would provide updates on its website and through social media.

The health unit is also reviewing recent recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization regarding the interchangeability of COVID-19 vaccines, and will provide updates on that issue in the coming days.

In communities outside Thunder Bay, local Family Health Teams continue to deliver vaccine clinics, using the expanded criteria.
